ACL Day 3 - Sunday Sept 17

65,000 people again 90 degrees rain in the morning and at night

Today was probably the best music day of the festival. The line ups were outstanding and the bands lived up to their potential. It rained early on about 11 and then held off until about 40 minutes into the closer, Tom Pettys set.

Flaming lips take the award for best use of blood and tampons. Not wanting to be out done by Ben Kwelers nose bleed yesterday, the lead singer of Flaming Lips doused him self in fake blood and had the audience toss tampons on the stage. This all going on while surrounded by a group of girls in Alien outfits and on the other side a gaggle of Santas.

Matisyahu was all energy. He had the crowd hooked with his Torah preaching reggae. People behind me didnt know his name and kep calling him the reggae Jew. Funny shit.

Best show of the concert and the day goes to Damian Marley. Reggae at its best with a mix of hip hop and dance hall. He had the entire audience going strong.

Overall a great show this year. Hope to see y'all next year in Austin for year 6!

ACL Day 2 - Saturday, Sept 16

65,000 people 97 Degrees

Today was the least exciting day for me when I looked at the schedule. I didnt really have a plan except to see Willie. As it turns out I saw some great bands that I handt heard before and ala in all it was a super day.

My son and I first went to see Phoenix on the ATT Blue Room Stage who was very good. We watched a few songs and wandered over to Ghostland Observatory on the Heiniken Stage. This Band was Techno and had the keyboardist in a Elvis type cape we watched them finish their set and we both thought it was interesting. My sons comment was "they are loud" They sure were.

We went back to camp under the pirate flag to see Ben Kweller. This was an interesting show. Bens nose was bleeding like a faucet for the 4 songs he got through. The big screen was showing his guitar covered in blood. He asked the audience for tampons and the crowd obliged by tossing them on stage. He then jammed one in his nose and tried to play a few more songs. At the end he appologized and said he couldnt go on. He also said the tampon swelled up pretty good in his nose.

Caught a few Nada Surf songs on the way to the Kids area where Ians mom was working for Salon INNU painting kids hair. Nada was recommended by a friend and played a good set. Im glad I caught them.

Until i started writing this i didnt realize what a long day i had at ACL on Sat. No wonder i was tired.

The Shins and Raconteurs (with Jack White) both played on the ATT stage. I took a nap in between as did alot of the crowd. I though the Raconteurs were really really good. They have a new fan.

Brazillian Girls I had also never heard of but they came recommended. They played on the Washington Mutual Stage which was close to the food area so on my way for a taco from Iron Cactus I got to hear some of them, Good beats, Ill have to catch them again sometime.

The final show of the night was either Massive Attack or Willie Nelson. Willie is a Texas legend and you cant miss that so off to the AMD stage I went. I have a feeling there were more people at Willie than were expected. It was massivly overpacked with people all the way from the stage to the entrance of ACL. The sound was not cranked so we weasled our way up and it turned out awesomely.

Mommas dont let your babys grow up to be cowboys!!

ACL Day 1 - Friday, Sept 15

65,000 people and 96.1 degrees

Day 1 kicked off with a bang. After getting down to the park (360+) acres and braving the shuttle bus I got to the park and decided to see what was going on.

The First act i caught was Gnarls Barkley. Awesome set opening up with a bit from Thomas Dolbys Blinded me with Science. The whole band was in Lab Coats but quickly got rid of them as it was bloody hot in the central Texas sun. They also did the Femms Gone Daddy Gone which was very good. Crazy came across as great and got the audience moving. All in all super show.

Next was Del Castillo, a local south Austin band whos getting national attention. They play a flamenco , mexican rock mix that has to be heard to be belived. Its very Austin sounding.
The guitarists were quick with the fingers and the audience was going nuts. They win best show of the day.

Theievery Corporation I had not heard of but it was recommended by a friend and also we had camp set up at the ATT stage where they were playing. The pirate flag marked our spot and we were flanked by the bamboo stalk and the bra and panties flag. Im glad I caught Theivery , the play a reggae house mix that was upbeat and had everone dancing. Belly dancer accompaniment was excellent as well.

Van Morrison was classic. Playing a mix from old and new, he had people rivited. Moondance and Brown Eyed Girl were awesome to hear live.
